Rediscovery of Korean traditional hat : the baptism on a boat of Jones

The statue of a baptism on a boat at Gyosan Church, the first church on Ganghwa Island in Korea, depicts an American missionary wearing a Korean traditional hat(갓 : Gat).

 

At the end of the 19th century, missionary Jones (Methodist), who was the second pastor of Naeri Church in Incheon after Appenzeller, came by boat to baptize the elderly mother of Lee Seung-hwan from Ganghwa Island.

 

But He was unable to disembark due to strong opposition from Kim Sang-im, the Hunjang(teacher) of the seodang(village school) in Gyosan-ri. Consequently, Lee Seung-hwan took his elderly mother to the sea and was baptized on board.

 

After his baptism on board, Kim Sang-im also converted to Christianity and established the Gyo-san Church (Yangsa-myeon, Ganghwa-gun, Incheon) in 1893.

 

This church was the first church on Ganghwa Island and was called the ‘Mother’s Church.’ Since then, Methodist churches have been established in up to 130 places, and most of the churches on Ganghwa Island belong to the Methodist Church.

The Statue of Andrea Kim Dae-geon is located in the Vatican City, specifically on the outer wall of St. Peter's Basilica, Saint Andrea Kim Dae-geon, Korea's first Catholic priest and martyred in 1846. At that time he was beheaded at the age of 25. He was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II in 1984.
